The default behavior of some Aspeed machines is to boot from the eMMC
device, like the rainier-bmc. Others like ast2600-evb could also boot
from eMMC if the HW strapping boot-from-eMMC bit was set. Add a
property to set or unset this bit. This is useful to test boot images.
For now, only activate this property on the ast2600-evb and rainier-bmc
machines for which eMMC images are available or can be built.

While the `allow-rpcs` option is documented in the CLI options
section, it was missing in the section about the configuration file
syntax.
And while it's mentioned that "the list of keys follows the command line
options", having `block-rpcs` there but not `allow-rpcs` seems like
being a potential source of confusion; and as it's cheap to add let's
just do so.

It is confusing having many different pieces of code enabling and
disabling commands, and it is not clear that they all have the same
semantics, especially wrt prioritization of the block/allow lists.
The code attempted to prevent the user from setting both the block
and allow lists concurrently, however, the logic was flawed as it
checked settings in the configuration file separately from the
command line arguments. Thus it was possible to set a block list
in the config file and an allow list via a command line argument.
The --dump-conf option also creates a configuration file with both
keys present, even if unset, which means it is creating a config
that cannot actually be loaded again.
Centralizing the code in a single method "ga_apply_command_filters"
will provide a strong guarantee of consistency and clarify the
intended behaviour. With this there is no compelling technical
reason to prevent concurrent setting of both the allow and block
lists, so this flawed restriction is removed.

Allowing the user to set the QGA_CONF environment variable to change
the default configuration file path is very unusual practice, made
more obscure since this ability is not documented.
This introduces the more normal '-c PATH' / '--config=PATH' command
line argument approach. This requires that we parse the comamnd line
twice, since we want the command line arguments to take priority over
the configuration file settings in general.

Commit b1f1e9dcfa renamed 'riscv,delegate' to 'riscv,delegation' since
it is the correct name as per dt-bindings, and the absence of the
correct name will result in validation fails when dumping the dtb and
using dt-validate.
But this change has a side-effect: every other firmware available that
is AIA capable is using 'riscv,delegate', and it will fault/misbehave if
this property isn't present. The property was added back in QEMU 7.0,
meaning we have 2 years of firmware development using the wrong
property.
Re-introducing 'riscv,delegate' while keeping 'riscv,delegation' allows
older firmwares to keep booting with the 'virt' machine.
'riscv,delegate' is then marked for future deprecation with its use
being discouraged from now on.

Fully eliminate the "Example" sections in QAPI doc blocks now that they
have all been converted to arbitrary rST syntax using the
".. qmp-example::" directive. Update tests to match.
Migrating to the new syntax
---------------------------
The old "Example:" or "Examples:" section syntax is now caught as an
error, but "Example::" is stil permitted as explicit rST syntax for an
un-lexed, generic preformatted text block.
('Example' is not special in this case, any sentence that ends with "::"
will start an indented code block in rST.)
Arbitrary rST for Examples is now possible, but it's strongly
recommended that documentation authors use the ".. qmp-example::"
directive for consistent visual formatting in rendered HTML docs. The
":title:" directive option may be used to add extra information into the
title bar for the example. The ":annotated:" option can be used to write
arbitrary rST instead, with nested "::" blocks applying QMP formatting
where desired.
Other choices available are ".. code-block:: QMP" which will not create
an "Example:" box, or the short-form "::" code-block syntax which will
not apply QMP highlighting when used outside of the qmp-example
directive.
Why?
----
This patch has several benefits:
1. Example sections can now be written more arbitrarily, mixing
explanatory paragraphs and code blocks however desired.
2. Example sections can now use fully arbitrary rST.
3. All code blocks are now lexed and validated as QMP; increasing
usability of the docs and ensuring validity of example snippets.
(To some extent - This patch only gaurantees it lexes correctly, not
that it's valid under the JSON or QMP grammars. It will catch most
small mistakes, however.)
4. Each qmp-example can be titled or annotated independently without
bypassing the QMP lexer/validator.
(i.e. code blocks are now for *code* only, so we don't have to
sacrifice exposition for having lexically valid examples.)
NOTE: As with the "Notes" conversion (d461c27973), this patch (and the
three preceding) may change the rendering order for Examples in
the current generator. The forthcoming qapidoc rewrite will fix
this by always generating documentation in source order.

For any code literal blocks inside of a qmp-example directive, apply and
enforce the QMP lexer/highlighter to those blocks.
This way, you won't need to write:

But instead, simply:

Once the directive block is exited, whatever the previous default
highlight language was will be restored; localizing the forced QMP
lexing to exclusively this directive.
Note, if the default language is *already* QMP, this directive will not
generate and restore redundant highlight configuration nodes. We may
well decide that the default language ought to be QMP for any QAPI
reference pages, but this way the directive behaves consistently no
matter where it is used.

apply QMP highlighting; you would need to use ".. code-block:: QMP". The
very next commit changes this behavior to assume all "::" code blocks
within this directive are QMP blocks.

With RHEL 8 support retired (It's been two years since RHEL9 released),
our very oldest build platform version of Sphinx is now 3.4.3; and
keeping backwards compatibility for versions as old as v1.6 when using
domain extensions is a lot of work we don't need to do.
This patch is motivated by my work creating a new QAPI domain, which
unlike the dbus documentation, cannot be allowed to regress by creating
a "dummy" doc when operating under older sphinx versions. Easier is to
raise our minimum version as far as we can push it forwards, reducing my
burden in creating cross-compatibility hacks and patches.

We do not need a dedicated section for notes. By eliminating a specially
parsed section, these notes can be treated as normal rST paragraphs in
the new QMP reference manual, and can be placed and styled much more
flexibly.
Convert all existing "Note" and "Notes" sections to pure rST. As part of
the conversion, capitalize the first letter of each sentence and add
trailing punctuation where appropriate to ensure notes look sensible and
consistent in rendered HTML documentation. Markup is also re-aligned to
the de-facto standard of 3 spaces for directives.
Update docs/devel/qapi-code-gen.rst to reflect the new paradigm, and
update the QAPI parser to prohibit "Note" sections while suggesting a
new syntax. The exact formatting to use is a matter of taste, but a good
candidate is simply:

... but there are other choices, too. The Sphinx readthedocs theme

This patch uses ".. note::" almost everywhere, with just two "caution"
directives. Several instances of "Notes:" have been converted to
merely ".. note::", or multiple ".. note::" where appropriate.
".. admonition:: notes" is used in a few places where we had an
ordered list of multiple notes that would not make sense as
standalone/separate admonitions. Two "Note:" following "Example:"
have been turned into ordinary paragraphs within the example.
NOTE: Because qapidoc.py does not attempt to preserve source ordering of
sections, the conversion of Notes from a "tagged section" to an
"untagged section" means that rendering order for some notes *may
change* as a result of this patch. The forthcoming qapidoc.py rewrite

Sphinx does not like sections without titles, because it wants to
convert every section into a reference. When there is no title, it
struggles to do this and transforms the tree inproperly.
Depending on the rST used, this may result in an assertion error deep in
the docutils HTMLWriter.
(Observed when using ".. admonition:: Notes" under such a section - When
this is transformed with its own <title> element, Sphinx is fooled into
believing this title belongs to the section and incorrect mutates the
docutils tree, leading to errors during rendering time.)
When parsing an untagged section (free paragraphs), skip making a hollow
section and instead append the parse results to the prior section.
Many Bothans died to bring us this information.
The resulting output changes are basically invisible.

Change get_doc_indented() to preserve indentation on all subsequent text
lines, and create a compatibility dedent() function for qapidoc.py that
removes indentation the same way get_doc_indented() did.
This is being done for the benefit of a new qapidoc generator which
requires that indentation in argument and features sections are
preserved.
Prior to this patch, a section like this:

would have its body text be parsed into:

We want to preserve the indentation for even the first body line so that
the entire block can be parsed directly as rST. This patch would now
parse that segment into:
```
lorem ipsum
dolor sit amet
consectetur adipiscing elit
```
This is helpful for formatting arguments and features as field lists in
rST, where the new generator will format this information as:
```
:arg type name: lorem ipsum
dolor sit amet
consectetur apidiscing elit
```
...and can be formed by the simple concatenation of the field list
construct and the body text. The indents help preserve the continuation
of a block-level element, and further allow the use of additional rST
block-level constructs such as code blocks, lists, and other such
markup.
This understandably breaks the existing qapidoc.py; so a new function is
added there to dedent the text for compatibility. Once the new generator
is merged, this function will not be needed any longer and can be
dropped.
I verified this patch changes absolutely nothing by comparing the
md5sums of the QMP ref html pages both before and after the change, so
it's certified inert. QAPI test output has been updated to reflect the
new strategy of preserving indents for rST.

In a forthcoming series that adds a new QMP documentation generator, it
will be helpful to have a linting baseline. However, there's no need to
shuffle around the deck chairs too much, because most of this code will
be removed once that new qapidoc generator (the "transmogrifier") is in
place.
To ease my pain: just turn off the black auto-formatter for most, but
not all, of qapidoc.py. This will help ensure that *new* code follows a
coding standard without bothering too much with cleaning up the existing
code.
Code that I intend to keep is still subject to the delinting beam.

shm_open() creates and opens a new POSIX shared memory object.
A POSIX shared memory object allows creating memory backend with an
associated file descriptor that can be shared with external processes
(e.g. vhost-user).
The new `memory-backend-shm` can be used as an alternative when
`memory-backend-memfd` is not available (Linux only), since shm_open()
should be provided by any POSIX-compliant operating system.
This backend mimics memfd, allocating memory that is practically
anonymous. In theory shm_open() requires a name, but this is allocated
for a short time interval and shm_unlink() is called right after
shm_open(). After that, only fd is shared with external processes
(e.g., vhost-user) as if it were associated with anonymous memory.
In the future we may also allow the user to specify the name to be
passed to shm_open(), but for now we keep the backend simple, mimicking
anonymous memory such as memfd.

The non-standard .fa library suffix breaks the link source
de-duplication done by Meson so drop it.
The lack of link source de-duplication causes AddressSanitizer to
complain ODR violations, and makes GNU ld abort when combined with
clang's LTO.
Fortunately, the non-standard suffix is not necessary anymore for
two reasons.
First, the non-standard suffix was necessary for fork-fuzzing.
Meson wraps all standard-suffixed libraries with --start-group and
--end-group. This made a fork-fuzz.ld linker script wrapped as well and
broke builds. Commit d2e6f9272d ("fuzz: remove fork-fuzzing
scaffolding") dropped fork-fuzzing so we can now restore the standard
suffix.
Second, the libraries are not even built anymore, because it is
possible to just use the object files directly via extract_all_objects().
The occurences of the suffix were detected and removed by performing
a tree-wide search with 'fa' and .fa (note the quotes and dot).

We used to request declare_dependency() to link_whole static libraries.
If a static library is a thin archive, GNU ld keeps all object files
referenced by the archive open, and sometimes exceeds the open file limit.
Another problem with link_whole is that suboptimal handling of nested
dependencies.
link_whole by itself does not propagate dependencies. In particular,
gnutls, a dependency of crypto, is not propagated to its users, and we
currently workaround the issue by declaring gnutls as a dependency for
each crypto user. On the other hand, if you write something like
libfoo = static_library('foo', 'foo.c', dependencies: gnutls)
foo = declare_dependency(link_whole: libfoo)
libbar = static_library('bar', 'bar.c', dependencies: foo)
bar = declare_dependency(link_whole: libbar, dependencies: foo)
executable('prog', sources: files('prog.c'), dependencies: [foo, bar])
hoping to propagate the gnutls dependency into bar.c, you'll see a
linking failure for "prog", because the foo.c.o object file is included in
libbar.a and therefore it is linked twice into "prog": once from libfoo.a
and once from libbar.a. Here Meson does not see the duplication, it
just asks the linker to link all of libfoo.a and libbar.a into "prog".
Instead of using link_whole, extract objects included in static libraries
and pass them to declare_dependency(); and then the dependencies can be
added as well so that they are propagated, because object files on the
linker command line are always deduplicated.
This requires Meson 1.1.0 or later.

The tacoma-bmc machine was a board including an AST2600 SoC based BMC
and a witherspoon like OpenPOWER system. It was used for bring up of
the AST2600 SoC in labs. It can be easily replaced by the rainier-bmc
machine which is part of a real product offering.

Enable FEAT_Debugv8p8 for max CPU. This feature is out of scope for QEMU
since it concerns the external debug interface for JTAG, but is
mandatory in Armv8.8 implementations, hence it is reported as supported
in the ID registers.

Enable CPU cluster support on SbsaQemu platform, so that users can
specify a 4-level CPU hierarchy sockets/clusters/cores/threads. And
this topology can be passed to the firmware through /cpus/topology
Device Tree.

For some use-cases, it is helpful to have more than one UART
available to the guest. If the second UART slot is not already used
for a TrustZone Secure-World-only UART, create it as a NonSecure UART
only when the user provides a serial backend (e.g. via a second
-serial command line option).
This avoids problems where existing guest software only expects a
single UART, and gets confused by the second UART in the DTB. The
major example of this is older EDK2 firmware, which will send the
GRUB bootloader output to UART1 and the guest serial output to UART0.
Users who want to use both UARTs with a guest setup including EDK2
are advised to update to EDK2 release edk2-stable202311 or newer.
(The prebuilt EDK2 blobs QEMU upstream provides are new enough.)

Firstly, the "Paused" state was added in the wrong place before. The state
machine section was describing PostcopyState, rather than MigrationStatus.
Drop the Paused state descriptions.
Then in the postcopy recover session, add more information on the state
machine for MigrationStatus in the lines. Add the new RECOVER_SETUP phase.

With the last few changes to the fdset infrastructure, we now allow
multifd to use an fdset when migrating to a file. This is useful for
the scenario where the management layer wants to have control over the
migration file.
By receiving the file descriptors directly, QEMU can delegate some
high level operating system operations to the management layer (such
as mandatory access control). The management layer might also want to
add its own headers before the migration stream.
Document the "file:/dev/fdset/#" syntax for the multifd migration with
mapped-ram. The requirements for the fdset mechanism are:
- the fdset must contain two fds that are not duplicates between
themselves;
- if direct-io is to be used, exactly one of the fds must have the
O_DIRECT flag set;
- the file must be opened with WRONLY on the migration source side;
- the file must be opened with RDONLY on the migration destination
side.

Now that Ubuntu 20.04 is not included anymore, there is no need to ship
it as part of QEMU; Ubuntu 22.04 includes it and Leap users anyway
need to install all the required dependencies from PyPI.
This mostly reverts commit ec77ee7634de123b7c899739711000fd21dab68b,
with just some changes to the wording.

Different versions of PC machine support different maximum vCPUs, and
even different features have limits on the maximum number of vCPUs (
For example, if x2apic is not enabled in the TCG case, the maximum of
255 vCPUs are supported).
It is difficult to list the maximum vCPUs under all restrictions. Thus,
to avoid confusion, avoid mentioning specific maximum vCPU number
limitations here.

This broke since eef0bae3a7 (migration: Remove block migration) but
even after that was addressed it still fails to complete. As it will
shortly be EOL lets to remove the runner definition and the related
ansible setup bits.

SEV-SNP support relies on a different set of properties/state than the
existing 'sev-guest' object. This patch introduces the 'sev-snp-guest'
object, which can be used to configure an SEV-SNP guest. For example,
a default-configured SEV-SNP guest with no additional information
passed in for use with attestation:

In some cases these blobs may be up to 4096 characters, but this is
generally well below the default limit for linux hosts where
command-line sizes are defined by the sysconf-configurable ARG_MAX
value, which defaults to 2097152 characters for Ubuntu hosts, for
example.

The legacy SCSI passthrough functionality has never been enabled for
VIRTIO 1.0 and was deprecated more than four years ago.
Get rid of it---almost, because QEMU is advertising it unconditionally
for legacy virtio-blk devices. Just parse the header and return a
nonzero status.

FEAT_WFxT introduces new instructions WFIT and WFET, which are like
the existing WFI and WFE but allow the guest to pass a timeout value
in a register. The instructions will wait for an interrupt/event as
usual, but will also stop waiting when the value of CNTVCT_EL0 is
greater than or equal to the specified timeout value.
We implement WFIT by setting up a timer to expire at the right
point; when the timer expires it sets the EXITTB interrupt, which
will cause the CPU to leave the halted state. If we come out of
halt for some other reason, we unset the pending timer.
We implement WFET as a nop, which is architecturally permitted and
matches the way we currently make WFE a nop.

The board list in target-arm.rst is supposed to be in alphabetical
order by the title text of each file (which is not the same as
alphabetical order by filename). A few items had got out of order;
correct them.
The entry for

remains out-of-order, because this is not its own file
but is currently part of the aspeed.rst file.

The PCOMMIT instruction was never included in any physical processor.
TCG implements it as a no-op instruction, but its utility is debatable
to say the least. Drop it from the decoder since it is only available
with "-cpu max", which does not guarantee migration compatibility
across versions, and deprecate the property just in case someone is
using it as "pcommit=off".

The old "-runas" option has the disadvantage that it is not visible
in the QAPI schema, so it is not available via the normal introspection
mechanisms. We've recently introduced the "-run-with" option for exactly
this purpose, which is meant to handle the options that affect the
runtime behavior. Thus let's introduce a "user=..." parameter here now
and deprecate the old "-runas" option.

The 'ref405ep' machine and PPC 405 CPU have no known users, firmware
images are not available, OpenWRT dropped support in 2019, U-Boot in
2017, Linux also is dropping support in 2024. It is time to let go of
this ancient hardware and focus on newer CPUs and platforms.

The fd: URI can currently trigger two different types of migration, a
TCP migration using sockets and a file migration using a plain
file. This is in conflict with the recently introduced (8.2) QMP
migrate API that takes structured data as JSON-like format. We cannot
keep the same backend for both types of migration because with the new
API the code is more tightly coupled to the type of transport. This
means a TCP migration must use the 'socket' transport and a file
migration must use the 'file' transport.
If we keep allowing fd: when using a file, this creates an issue when
the user converts the old-style (fd:) to the new style ("transport":
"socket") invocation because the file descriptor in question has
previously been allowed to be either a plain file or a socket.
To avoid creating too much confusion, we can simply deprecate the fd:
+ file usage, which is thought to be rarely used currently and instead
establish a 1:1 correspondence between fd: URI and socket transport,
and file: URI and file transport.

The 'compress' migration capability enables the old compression code
which has shown issues over the years and is thought to be less stable
and tested than the more recent multifd-based compression. The old
compression code has been deprecated in 8.2 and now is time to remove
it.

affects the QMP and HMP commands, the feature can still be accessed by

A previous commit narrowed the type of .visit_alternate_type()
parameter @variants from QAPISchemaVariants to QAPISchemaAlternatives.
Rename it to @alternatives.
One of them passes @alternatives to helper function
gen_visit_alternate(). Rename its @variants parameter to
@alternatives as well.

This device implements the IM120417002 colors shield v1.1 for Arduino
(which relies on the DM163 8x3-channel led driving logic) and features
a simple display of an 8x8 RGB matrix. The columns of the matrix are
driven by the DM163 and the rows are driven externally.

FEAT_Spec_FPACC is a feature describing speculative behaviour in the
event of a PAC authontication failure when FEAT_FPACCOMBINE is
implemented. FEAT_Spec_FPACC means that the speculative use of
pointers processed by a PAC Authentication is not materially
different in terms of the impact on cached microarchitectural state
(caches, TLBs, etc) between passing and failing of the PAC
Authentication.
QEMU doesn't do speculative execution, so we can advertise
this feature.

FEAT_ETS2 is a tighter set of guarantees about memory ordering
involving translation table walks than the old FEAT_ETS; FEAT_ETS has
been retired from the Arm ARM and the old ID_AA64MMFR1.ETS == 1
now gives no greater guarantees than ETS == 0.
FEAT_ETS2 requires:
* the virtual address of a load or store that appears in program
order after a DSB cannot be translated until after the DSB
completes (section B2.10.9)
* TLB maintenance operations that only affect translations without
execute permission are guaranteed complete after a DSB
(R_BLDZX)
* if a memory access RW2 is ordered-before memory access RW2,
then RW1 is also ordered-before any translation table walk
generated by RW2 that generates a Translation, Address size
or Access flag fault (R_NNFPF, I_CLGHP)
As with FEAT_ETS, QEMU is already compliant, because we do not
reorder translation table walk memory accesses relative to other
memory accesses, and we always guarantee to have finished TLB
maintenance as soon as the TLB op is done.
Update the documentation to list FEAT_ETS2 instead of the
no-longer-existent FEAT_ETS, and update the 'max' CPU ID registers.

FEAT_CSV2_3 adds a mechanism to identify if hardware cannot disclose
information about whether branch targets and branch history trained
in one hardware described context can control speculative execution
in a different hardware context.
There is no branch prediction in TCG, so we don't need to do anything
to be compliant with this. Upadte the '-cpu max' ID registers to
advertise the feature.

As of version DDI0487K.a of the Arm ARM, some architectural features
which previously didn't have official names have been named. Add
these to the list of features which QEMU's TCG emulation supports.
Mostly these are features which we thought of as part of baseline 8.0
support. For SVE and SVE2, the names have been brought into line
with the FEAT_* naming convention of other extensions, and some
sub-components split into separate FEAT_ items. In a few cases (eg
FEAT_CCIDX, FEAT_DPB2) the omission from our list was just an oversight.

Some devices and machines need to handle the reset before a vmsave
snapshot is loaded differently -- the main user is the handling of
RNG seed information, which does not want to put a new RNG seed into
a ROM blob when we are doing a snapshot load.
Currently this kind of reset handling is supported only for:
* TYPE_MACHINE reset methods, which take a ShutdownCause argument
* reset functions registered with qemu_register_reset_nosnapshotload
To allow a three-phase-reset device to also distinguish "snapshot
load" reset from the normal kind, add a new ResetType
RESET_TYPE_SNAPSHOT_LOAD. All our existing reset methods ignore
the reset type, so we don't need to update any device code.
Add the enum type, and make qemu_devices_reset() use the
right reset type for the ShutdownCause it is passed. This
allows us to get rid of the device_reset_reason global we
were using to implement qemu_register_reset_nosnapshotload().

GlusterFS+RDMA has been deprecated 8 years ago in commit
0552ff2465 ("block/gluster: deprecate rdma support"):
gluster volfile server fetch happens through unix and/or tcp,
it doesn't support volfile fetch over rdma. The rdma code may
actually mislead, so to make sure things do not break, for now
we fallback to tcp when requested for rdma, with a warning.
If you are wondering how this worked all these days, its the
gluster libgfapi code which handles anything other than unix
transport as socket/tcp, sad but true.
Besides, the whole RDMA subsystem was deprecated in commit
e9a54265f5 ("hw/rdma: Deprecate the pvrdma device and the rdma
subsystem") released in v8.2.

Hardware of sbsa-ref board is nowadays defined by both BSA and SBSA
specifications. Then BBR defines firmware interface.
Added note about DeviceTree data passed from QEMU to firmware. It is
very minimal and provides only data we use in firmware.
Added NUMA information to list of things reported by DeviceTree.

At least for now cpu-topology is implemented only for KVM.
We already say this, but this tries to be more explicit,
and also show it in the examples.
This adds a new reference in the introduction that we can point to,
whenever we need to reference accelerators and how to select them.

Shared objects lack spoofing protection.
For VHOST_USER_BACKEND_SHARED_OBJECT_REMOVE messages
received by the vhost-user interface, any backend was
allowed to remove entries from the shared table just
by knowing the UUID. Only the owner of the entry
shall be allowed to removed their resources
from the table.
To fix that, add a check for all
*SHARED_OBJECT_REMOVE messages received.
A vhost device can only remove TYPE_VHOST_DEV
entries that are owned by them, otherwise skip
the removal, and inform the device that the entry
has not been removed in the answer.

pSeries machines before 3.0 have complex migration back
compatibility code we'd like to get ride of. The last
one is 2.12, which is 6 years old. We just deprecated up
to the 2.11 machine in commit 1392617d35 ("spapr: Tag
pseries-2.1 - 2.11 machines as deprecated").
Take to opportunity to also deprecate the 2.12 machines.

This patch adds a way to specify an NGUID for a given NVMe Namespace using a
string of hexadecimal digits with an optional '-' separator to group bytes. For
instance:

In the commit 54c4ea8f3a ("hw/core/machine-smp: Deprecate unsupported
'parameter=1' SMP configurations"), the SMP related item is put under
the section "User-mode emulator command line arguments" instead of
"System emulator command line arguments".
-smp is a system emulator command, so move SMP configurations item to
system emulator section.

Commit bc38feddeb ("io: fsync before closing a file channel") added a
fsync/fdatasync at the closing point of the QIOChannelFile to ensure
integrity of the migration stream in case of QEMU crash.
The decision to do the sync at qio_channel_close() was not the best
since that function runs in the main thread and the fsync can cause
QEMU to hang for several minutes, depending on the migration size and
disk speed.
To fix the hang, remove the fsync from qio_channel_file_close().
At this moment, the migration code is the only user of the fsync and
we're taking the tradeoff of not having a sync at all, leaving the
responsibility to the upper layers.

QEMU includes some models of old Arm machine types which are
a bit problematic for us because:
* they're written in a very old way that uses numerous APIs that we
would like to get away from (eg they don't use qdev, they use
qemu_system_reset_request(), they use vmstate_register(), etc)
* they've been that way for a decade plus and nobody particularly has
stepped up to try to modernise the code (beyond some occasional
work here and there)
* we often don't have test cases for them, which means that if we
do try to do the necessary refactoring work on them we have no
idea if they even still work at all afterwards
All these machine types are also of hardware that has largely passed
away into history and where I would not be surprised to find that
e.g. the Linux kernel support was never tested on real hardware
any more.
After some consultation with the Linux kernel developers, we
are going to deprecate:
All PXA2xx machines:
akita Sharp SL-C1000 (Akita) PDA (PXA270)
borzoi Sharp SL-C3100 (Borzoi) PDA (PXA270)
connex Gumstix Connex (PXA255)
mainstone Mainstone II (PXA27x)

Rationale:
* for QEMU dropping individual machines is much less beneficial
than if we can drop support for an entire SoC
* the OMAP2 QEMU code in particular is large, old and unmaintained,
and none of the OMAP2 kernel maintainers said they were using
QEMU in any of their testing/development
* although there is a setup that is booting test kernels on some
of the PXA2xx machines, nobody seemed to be using them as part
of their active kernel development and my impression from the
email thread is that PXA is the closest of all these SoC families
to being dropped from the kernel soon
* nobody said they were using cheetah, so it's entirely
untested and quite probably broken
* on the other hand the OMAP1 sx1 model does seem to be being
used as part of kernel development, and there was interest
in keeping collie around
In particular, the mainstone, tosa and z2 machine types have
already been dropped from Linux.
Mark all these machine types as deprecated.

Currently, it was allowed for users to specify the unsupported
topology parameter as "1". For example, x86 PC machine doesn't
support drawer/book/cluster topology levels, but user could specify
"-smp drawers=1,books=1,clusters=1".
This is meaningless and confusing, so that the support for this kind of
configurations is marked deprecated since 9.0. And report warning
message for such case like:

The "parameter=0" SMP configurations have been marked as deprecated
since v6.2.
For these cases, -smp currently returns the warning and adjusts the
zeroed parameters to 1 by default.
Remove the above compatibility logic in v9.0, and return error directly
if any -smp parameter is set as 0.

Add the necessary files to add a simple RCC implementation with just
reads from and writes to registers. Also instantiate the RCC in the

A few deficiencies in the current device model need to be noted.
1. FIFOs are not used. All sends and receives are done directly.
2. Repeated starts are not emulated. Repeated starts can be triggered in real
hardware by sending a new read transfer request in the window time between
transfer active set of write transfer request and done bit set of the same.

The macOS jobs in our CI recently started failing, complaining that
the distutils module is not available anymore. And indeed, according to
https://peps.python.org/pep-0632/ it's been deprecated since a while
and now likely got removed in recent Python versions.
Fortunately, we only use it for a version check via LooseVersion here
which we don't really need anymore - according to Repology.org, these

So except for CentOS 8, all distros are using a newer version of
sphinx-rtd-theme, and for CentOS 8 we don't support compiling with
the Sphinx of the distro anymore anyway, since it's based on the
Python 3.6 interpreter there. For compiling on CentOS 8, you have
to use the alternative Python 3.8 interpreter which comes without
Sphinx, so that needs the Sphinx installed via pip in the venv
instead, and that is using a newer version, too, according to our
pythondeps.toml file.
Thus we can simply drop the version check now to get rid of the
distutils dependency here.

The tutorial doesn't match reality since at least 2013. Repairing it
involves fixing the following issues:
* Update for commit 6d32717155 (aio / timers: Remove alarm timers):
replace the broken examples. Instead of having one for returning a
struct and another for returning a list of structs, do just one for
the latter. This resolves the FIXME added in commit
e218052f92 (aio / timers: De-document -clock) back in 2014.
* Update for commit 895a2a80e0 (qapi: Use 'struct' instead of 'type'
in schema).
* Update for commit 3313b6124b (qapi: add qapi2texi script): add
required documentation to the schema snippets, and drop section
"Command Documentation".

"unstable"): supply the required feature, deemphasize the x- prefix.
* Update for commit dd98234c05 (qapi: introduce x-query-roms QMP
command): rephrase from "add new command" to "examine existing

generated C): hello-world's message argument no longer comes with a
has_message, add a second argument that does.

Add a new migration capability 'mapped-ram'.
The core of the feature is to ensure that RAM pages are mapped
directly to offsets in the resulting migration file instead of being
streamed at arbitrary points.
The reasons why we'd want such behavior are:
- The resulting file will have a bounded size, since pages which are
dirtied multiple times will always go to a fixed location in the
file, rather than constantly being added to a sequential
stream. This eliminates cases where a VM with, say, 1G of RAM can
result in a migration file that's 10s of GBs, provided that the
workload constantly redirties memory.
- It paves the way to implement O_DIRECT-enabled save/restore of the
migration stream as the pages are ensured to be written at aligned
offsets.
- It allows the usage of multifd so we can write RAM pages to the
migration file in parallel.
For now, enabling the capability has no effect. The next couple of
patches implement the core functionality.

This option controls the host page size. From the mis-usage in
our own testsuite, this is easily confused with guest page size.
The only thing that occurs when changing the host page size is
that stuff breaks, because one cannot actually change the host
page size. Therefore reject all but the no-op setting as part
of the deprecation process.

With the new plugin register API we can now track changes to register
values. Currently the implementation is fairly dumb which will slow
down if a large number of register values are being tracked. This
could be improved by only instrumenting instructions which mention
registers we are interested in tracking.
Example usage:

./tests/tcg/aarch64-linux-user/sha512-sve
will display in the execlog any changes to the stack pointer (sp) and
the SVE Z registers.
As testing registers every instruction will be quite a heavy operation
there is an additional flag which attempts to optimise the register
tracking by only instrumenting instructions which are likely to change
its value. This relies on the QEMU disassembler showing up the register
names in disassembly so is an explicit opt-in.

Now that system reset uses a three-phase-reset, update the reset
documentation to include a section describing how this works.
Include documentation of the current major beartrap in reset, which
is that only devices on the qbus tree will get automatically reset.

We have an OBJECT_DEFINE_TYPE_EXTENDED macro, plus several variations
on it, which emits the boilerplate for the TypeInfo and ensures it is
registered with the type system. However, all the existing macros
insist that the type being defined has its own FooClass struct, so
they aren't useful for the common case of a simple leaf class which
doesn't have any new methods or any other need for its own class
struct (that is, for the kind of type that OBJECT_DECLARE_SIMPLE_TYPE
declares).
Pull the actual implementation of OBJECT_DEFINE_TYPE_EXTENDED out
into a new DO_OBJECT_DEFINE_TYPE_EXTENDED which parameterizes the
value we use for the class_size field. This lets us add a new
OBJECT_DEFINE_SIMPLE_TYPE which does the same job as the various
existing OBJECT_DEFINE_*_TYPE_* family macros for this kind of simple
type, and the variant OBJECT_DEFINE_SIMPLE_TYPE_WITH_INTERFACES for
when the type will implement some interfaces.

pseries machines before version 2.11 have undergone many changes to
correct issues, mostly regarding migration compatibility. This is
obfuscating the code uselessly and makes maintenance more difficult.
Remove them and only keep the last version of the 2.x series, 2.12,
still in use by old distros.

The ppc64 and s390x tests were first marked skipIf GITLAB_CI by commit
c0c8687ef0 ("tests/avocado: disable BootLinuxPPC64 test in CI"), and
commit 0f26d94ec9 ("tests/acceptance: skip s390x_ccw_vrtio_tcg on
GitLab") due to being very heavy-weight for gitlab CI.
Commit 9b45cc9931 ("docs/devel: rationalise unstable gitlab tests under
FLAKY_TESTS") changed this to being flaky but it isn't really, it just
had a long runtime.
So take the SPEED=slow variable from qtests and introduce it to avocado,
and make these tests require it.

Previously not all references mentioned any spec version at all.
Given r3.1 is the current specification available for evaluation at
www.computeexpresslink.org update references to refer to that.
Hopefully this won't become a never ending job.
A few structure definitions have been updated to add new fields.
Defaults of 0 and read only are valid choices for these new DVSEC
registers so go with that for now.
There are additional error codes and some of the 'questions' in
the comments are resolved now.
Update documentation reference to point to the CXL r3.1 specification
with naming closer to what is on the cover.
For cases where there are structure version numbers, add defines
so they can be found next to the register definitions.

Some SuperI/O devices such as the VIA south bridges or the PC87312 controller

Some SuperI/O devices such as the VIA south bridges or the PC87312 controller
are able to relocate their SuperI/O functions. Add a convenience function for
implementing this in the VIA south bridges.
This convenience function relies on previous simplifications in exec/ioport
which avoids some duplicate synchronization of I/O port base addresses. The
naming of the function is inspired by its memory_region_set_address() pendant.

The QAPI generator forces you to document your stuff. Except for
command arguments, event data, and members of enum and object types:
these the generator silently "documents" as "Not documented".
We can't require proper documentation there without first fixing all
the offenders. We've always had too many offenders to pull that off.
Right now, we have more than 500. Worse, we seem to fix old ones no
faster than we add new ones: in the past year, we fixed 22 ones, but
added 26 new ones.
To help arrest the backsliding, make missing documentation an error
unless the command, type, or event is in listed in new pragma
documentation-exceptions.
List all the current offenders: 117 commands and types in qapi/, and 9
in qga/.

QAPISchemaGenRSTVisitor._nodes_for_members() has a special case to
auto-generate documentation for a union tag member of implicit (enum)
type that lacks documentation.
This was useful for simple unions, where the tag member's type was
implicitly. The only implicit enum type left today is 'QType'. Not
worth a special case. Drop. No change to generated documentation.

This might be premature but while streamlining the avocado tests I
realised the only tests we have are "check-tcg" ones. The ageing
fedora-cris-cross image works well enough for developers but can't be
used in CI as we need supported build platforms to build QEMU.
Does this mean the writing is on the wall for this architecture?

The 'header-rows' directive indicates how many rows in the generated
table are to be highlighted as headers. We only have one such row in
the CSV file included. This removes the accident bold highlighting
of the 'i486' CPU model.

We can't just embed labels directly into files like qemu-options.hx which
are included from multiple top-level rST files, because Sphinx sees the
labels as duplicate: https://github.com/sphinx-doc/sphinx/issues/9707
So add an optional argument to the SRST directive which causes a label
of the form '.. _DOCNAME-HXFILE-LABEL:' to be emitted, where 'DOCNAME'
is the name of the top level rST file, 'HXFILE' is the filename of the
.hx file, and 'LABEL' is the text provided within the 'SRST()' directive.
Using the DOCNAME of the top-level rST document means that it is unique
even when the .hx file is included from two different documents, as is
the case for qemu-options.hx
Now where the Xen PV documentation refers to the documentation for the
-initrd command line option, it can emit a link directly to it as
'<system/invocation-qemu-options-initrd>'.
