- added YM2413 to VRC-7 (Lagrange Point OST)
- added support for recorded samples to Jaleco sport titles and to Bandai Family Trainer
Aerobics Studio, thanks to notes by hap and egoh, and recordings by Pongbashi
(samples are needed because these games use a currently undumpable speech chip)
- added support for NES-EVENT pcb used by Nintendo World Championship 1990,
including dipswitches
- added support for Galoob Game Genie real usage (in addition to the codes which
Puggsy added to his cheat collections): when you load ggenie, a second cartslot
becomes available to load another game attached to the cheat device (e.g. with
"mess.exe nes -cart ggenie -cart2 smb") and you can enter the cheat codes as in a
real NES
- added support for Nantettatte!! Baseball lock-on mechanism, based on the tests
performed by naruko on his carts: when you load nantbb, a second cartslot
becomes available to load one of the two update minicarts (91 Hen or OB Hen)
- improved emulation of Namcot 163, 175 and 340 boards, based on the tests
performed by naruko, lidnariq and bootgod on the real hardware
- moved Nantettatte!! Baseball minicarts to a separate list (nes_ntbrom.xml) because
they cannot be loaded in the NES directly, but only through the nantbb subslot
- emulated bus conflict (CPU/PRG) in PCBs documented as having it
- partial emulation of open bus, enough to make working the games using it as a sort
of protection
- fixed crash when loading files using FFE mappers
- fixed mirroring in some boards (Sunsoft DCS and UNL-CC-21) and in some games
(e.g. Paris Dakar Rally Special and Escape from Atlantis)
- fixed a few bugs in Tengen 800032 emulation (mapper 64), promoting Klax, Xybots
and Road Runner to work state
- fixed Tengen 800037 emulation (mapper 158), promoting US Alien Syndrome to work

- added working emulation of many bootleg pcbs used for pirate conversions from FDS
(Ai Senshi Nicol, Doki Doki Panic, Fuuun Shaolin Kyo, Green Beret, Monty no Doki
Doki Daidassou, Tobidase Daisakusen, Super Mario Bros Malee 2 / Genius Merio Bros...)
- improved emulation of many pirate pcb (BMC-GOLDENCARD-6IN1, KS7013B,
KS7012, BMC-GHOSTBUSTERS63IN1, UNL-MALISB, MAXI15 and more...)
- improved RacerMate Challenge II emulation, but the game is still not working due to
unemulated bicycle controller
- added CPU-based IRQ mode in Tengen 800032 emulation (mapper 64), fixing
Skulls & Crossbones gfx (but the game is still not working)
- fixed many small inaccuracies in the old code, spot during the conversion
- added support for most other known pcbs, even if in most cases emulation is only
sketchy
- reduced the need of fake alt pbcs for boards which only differed by mirroring handling
(these are now recognized through the "mirroring" feature)
- removed fake wram which was added to a lot of partially documented pcbs and
re-added it only where actually present, so to more accurately document what was
really in the carts
Out of whatsnew: There's still a lot to do (e.g. to clean up the implementation of the pirate pcbs)
but I hope that submitting this now I can get some wider testing help so to catch and fix regressions
before next release :)

- added emulation for the protection device used in some pirate carts
out of whatsnew. there are one or two (possibly stupid) bugs in the new drivers
causing glitches in several games (e.g. SameGame, or F1 ROC 2) which prevent
us from removing the fake driver clones with add-on CPUs. if anyone is willing to
help to trace them, you're all welcome.

- simplified loading and bankswitch mechanism
- added support for real Sonic & Knuckles lock-on emulation (you can combine it freely
with other carts, through the -cart2 slot which gets added automatically)
- remove need for "pcb_type" feature from xml softlist, since the new "slot" feature is enough
- moved SVP emulation to src/mess/ in view of conversion to a slot device as well

softlist.c: split the <info> field (added some time ago to handle compatibility requirements) into <info> and <sharedfeat>.

the former stays tied to the whole software entry, the latter gets inherited by each part.

A bunch of comments about this change: with the latest code, each software entry can store three different kind of 'extrainfo' strings. They are thought to be used in specific cases, so let me briefly explain the big picture behind them.
1. <feature> fields: these are well established in current lists. they belong to a <part> element (i.e. a specific cart or cd disc or floppy disk) and they can be used to store hardware details that belongs to that specific <part>. typically, we have used these to describe the pcb_type of a cart (e.g. the board type in NES carts or in AES carts, to remove the need of specific mappers), so that at loading time they can be checked and the emulation can be setup accordingly. However, some lists (e.g. snes.xml and, in a few months, nes.xml as well) use these more creatively, to e.g. document the exact chip locations on the pcb

2. <sharedfeat> fields: these are listed in the main <software> entry, but get stored together with the <feature> of each part of this software. E.g. if your software entry consists of 9 floppies, these shared features will be inherited by *all* the disks. The typical usage for this is to list the compatibility requirements of the software entry, e.g. a PAL system, or the presence of an expansion card, or the presence of additional RAM. These compatibility settings have to be manually parsed in the loading code by the driver author, but it makes more sense to define them only once for each software entry than to copy and paste it for each <part> (and believe me, it makes a difference both in terms of avoiding redundant lines and in terms of time necessary to create the xml list itself, when you deal with hundreds of multidisk entries like in the forthcoming pc8801 floppy list). consider this as a shortcut for 1. when you have multidisk software.

3. <info> fields: these belongs directly to the main <software> entry, like the <sharedfeat>, but they do get stored in the main software entry, not with the <part>. They should be used to store additional info which might be of use for frontends, but that are not strictly necessary for emulation (if you have to describe some fundamental hardware characteristic that has to be checked during emulation, then you should use <sharedfeat> not <info>). Possible examples include the name of the development team, or the serial number of the cart, etc but it's up to the list creator to decide what to use this for and if to use it at all

As already said, imho the format can now be considered finalized. I cannot really think of anything else that we might want to include in the format, without getting redundant.
p.s. In fact, some small change is still required in the core to fully support the new fields (e.g. at the moment <info> are not loaded by the core), but the xml format won't be touched.

Comment: There are still a few issues with some games where the data might need refining. The following sets do not work, even as a 1 slot game but work as normal sets; (mt_tetri, mt_gng, mt_fwld, mt_srbb)

Added a preliminary Softlist support for Sega Megatech, that allows multi-cart support [David Haywood]

- SoftList is incompelte, I hate working with the XML, if somebody wants to add the remaining titles, be my guest
- SMS games have issues, the CPU isn't being properly reset (or something) when moving between games, so stick to only a single SMS game for now or the z80 will crash.
It used to work, but the code has been out of use for a while.
- syntax is MAME megatech -cart1 mt_beast -cart2 mt_soni2 -cart8 mt_shar2
